Family Law Attorney Angela McIlveen Angela McIlveen

North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law | CEO & Co-Founder of McIlveen Family Law Firm

Angela McIlveen is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Family Law, experienced trial attorney, and CEO and Co-Founder of McIlveen Family Law Firm. She represents clients throughout North Carolina in complex divorce, equitable distribution, alimony, child custody, and other family law matters.

Angela’s practice is particularly focused on high-net-worth divorce and financially complex cases involving closely held businesses, real estate, investment portfolios, retirement assets, executive compensation, separate property claims, and significant marital estates.

Does Angela McIlveen handle high-net-worth and complex divorce cases?

Yes. Angela represents clients in high-net-worth and complex North Carolina divorce cases involving significant assets, complicated income structures, businesses, real estate, investments, retirement benefits, alimony, and other sophisticated financial issues.

In these cases, identifying what property exists is often only the beginning. Assets may need to be classified as marital, separate, or divisible; businesses and other property may require valuation; separate property may need to be traced; and the tax, liquidity, and long-term financial consequences of a proposed resolution must be considered.

Angela’s experience in equitable distribution and property division allows her to approach these cases strategically rather than viewing each asset or claim in isolation.

Does Angela McIlveen represent business owners in divorce?

Angela represents both business owners and spouses of business owners in divorces involving closely held companies and other business interests.

Her perspective is unusual because she is not only a family law attorney—she is also a business owner who has spent years building and operating a substantial professional-services company.

As CEO and Co-Founder of McIlveen Family Law Firm, Angela understands issues such as cash flow, owner compensation, distributions, debt, working capital, liquidity, growth, and the difference between what a business may be worth on paper and the cash actually available to its owner.

That practical experience is particularly valuable when a divorce involves business valuation, determining marital and separate interests in a company, analyzing income available for support, or structuring a property division that must work in the real world after the case is over.

A valuation is an important number. It is not always the entire story.

What is Angela McIlveen’s approach to divorce litigation?

Angela is an experienced trial lawyer who enjoys the strategy involved in difficult family law cases, particularly when significant financial interests are at stake.

She is comfortable litigating a case when litigation is necessary to protect a client’s interests. But she does not believe that taking every dispute to court is a sign of strength.

Her approach is to first understand what the client ultimately wants to accomplish. From there, she evaluates the facts, the law, the financial consequences, the available evidence, and the risks of each potential path.

Sometimes the best strategy is aggressive litigation. Sometimes it is negotiation or mediation. The objective is not simply to win the next argument—it is to position the client as well as possible when the case is over.

Angela frequently tells clients that one of the most important parts of her job is helping them separate what feels urgent from what is actually important. Decisions made during a divorce can affect a family’s finances, business interests, and relationships for many years.

Why did Angela McIlveen become a family law attorney?

Angela’s connection to family law began long before she became a lawyer.

Her parents went through a difficult divorce when she was six years old, giving her an early understanding of the effect family conflict can have on children.

Years later, Angela experienced custody litigation from another perspective—as a parent sitting in the witness chair rather than the attorney asking the questions.

Those experiences shaped the way she practices family law today.

Angela understands that while lawyers may talk about equitable distribution, alimony, custody, evidence, and statutes, clients are dealing with their children, homes, businesses, finances, and futures.

That personal perspective is also one reason she believes effective family law representation requires judgment as well as advocacy. There are cases that need to be tried and cases in which a negotiated solution will produce a better long-term result. Knowing the difference matters.

What is Angela McIlveen’s role at McIlveen Family Law Firm?

Angela is the CEO and Co-Founder of McIlveen Family Law Firm, a North Carolina family law firm with offices in Gastonia, Charlotte, and Raleigh.

As CEO, Angela has been involved in virtually every aspect of building the firm, including strategy, growth, attorney development, operations, technology, financial management, client service, and organizational culture.

Building a business while practicing law has also shaped Angela’s approach to representing entrepreneurs, executives, professionals, and business owners. She understands that financial decisions cannot always be separated from business decisions—and that both can have consequences long after a divorce judgment is entered.
